Optimization of data deployment in data centers using BitTorrent and OpenFlow

Abstract

Servers in data centers must frequently synchronize their data with a centralized file server. Nowadays, BitTorrent is mostly used, whereby a so-called tracker sends a random list of peers to each node of the data center. The node then communicates with these peers to exchange data. However, the network capacity is underutilized with a random list. NOX is an open-source OpenFlow network controller. We have optimized the synchronization process by integrating a BitTorrent tracker in discovery, an application for NOX, which learns the network topology. Now each node is provided with a list of peers that ensures the highest throughput speed. We demonstrate an increase of around 10% in speed.
